If your windows never stay clear as long as you’d like, it’s not your imagination, and it’s not how you keep your home. Homes in the Lake Huron towns, including the subdivisions a few kilometres inland, have more working against their glass than most.

What’s actually on your glass

  • Hard water minerals. Every rain, sprinkler and hose rinse leaves calcium and magnesium behind as spots and a cloudy film.
  • Dust and pollen. New subdivisions bring construction dust; mature trees drop pollen, sap and debris onto the glass and into the frames.
  • Lake insects and webs. On warm nights, insects come off the lake and head for the lights, and spiders follow them to your windows.
  • Wind and weather. Wind off the lake carries fine grit that settles on glass, fastest on the side facing the water.

Why some streets are worse

Shady, treed lots hold moisture, and film and webbing cling to damp glass. Southcott Pines in Grand Bend is a clear example, and so are the lower beach areas near Kincardine, like Lurgan Beach and Point Clark. Homes in these pockets often need cleaning more often than an open lot.

What actually keeps them clear

  • Pure water, not tap water. It removes the minerals instead of adding more, so the glass dries with no spots.
  • RainBlock. Rain beads up and rolls off instead of drying in spots.
  • A schedule. Staying ahead of the build-up is far easier than stripping it once a year. For the worst pockets, four cleans a year keeps glass clear between visits.

None of this reflects on your home. It’s the reality of living somewhere beautiful, near the lake and under the trees. The view is worth keeping clear.
